Hailed as “the twentieth century’s delay pedal of the future,” we have the Caroline Kilobyte 2000 digital delay. This updated version of Caroline Guitar Company’s classic digital delay effect equips fans new and experienced with a theoretical vision of a digital future not yet realized.
The original Caroline Kilobyte “lo-fi” digital delay has since been described by Caroline as many people’s “gateway into boutique” with its unique style, exciting playability, and vivid digital tone. The Kilobyte 2000 expands on the original’s formula for success with a number of key additions to bring the model into the proverbial twenty-first century. All the colorful PT2399 chip delay tones of the original Kilobyte are front and center here for creating delay trails that range from technicolor to monochromatic. Life in high definition was never particularly the Kilobyte’s priority, and the 2000 follows such an example for electrifying lo-fi digital echoes sure to make the noise junkies of the early Information Age salivate.
Where the Kilobyte 2000 strays from the usual Kilobyte formula and onto the worldwide information superhighway is in its host of added features to expand its digital brain to new hemispheres. Firstly, the Kilobyte 2000 loads in a new “sharpness” control that adjusts the tonal character of the pedal’s repeats. This control harnesses the power of the pedal’s preamp gain range, making delay trails either bright and spikey or muffled and muted. In either instance, the Kilobyte 2000 makes excellent work of its effect.
This sharpness control is matched with an onboard Havoc dial that works in tandem with the Kilobyte 2000’s Havoc footswitch. Operating as either a tap tempo or a self-oscillation control, the Kilobyte 2000 works wonderfully for on-the-fly noisiness as tapered or stoked by the front-facing Havoc control dial. These considerations for noise, playability, and experimentation are accompanied by the real show-stopper of the effect an onboard effects loop. This addition to the overall equation allows for players to loop in their own selection of effects with a Y cable to affect the Kilobyte 2000’s delay trails. Ever wanted a phaser on just your lo-fi trails? Maybe a distortion? Another delay altogether? The world is your oyster with this special feature.
With a world of lo-fi delays to explore, the Caroline Kilobyte 2000 is a ticket into the mythical and mysterious new millennium.
