This final volume in Liszts Annes de plerinage in the Urtext edition by renowned Liszt scholar, Leslie Howard, contains the Troisime Anne Italie S163, together with Trois Odes funbres S516, S516a & S517. Although the Odes funbres are not originally part of the Annes they have been included in this volume because they form a musical and spiritual bridge between Annes II and III. Together, these works demonstrate a character not met elsewhere in the great music literature of the nineteenth century. The thinning out of the style, almost to the point of deliberate barrenness, and the simultaneous impression of avant-garde pioneering and the reflection in solitude, even loneliness, that comes with age are particular to Liszt.
