Universal Audio Lion 68 Super Lead Amp Effect Pedal

The Universal Audio Lion 68 Super Lead Amp pedal emulates the legendary, earth-rattling tones of three vintage Plexi-style amplifiers from the late 1960s. For many this pedal is definitely in the “Finally!” category, as Universal Audio is truly a trusted authority when it comes to recreating the magic of a vintage Marshall. The company has already offered various Marshall plugins within their Apollo series of DAWs and as Native plugins. Now, the magic is available within the UAFX engine.

The UAFX Lion offers three styles of Plexi heads: Bass, Lead, and Brown. Bass mode models the Marshall Super Bass head, noted for its spongier attack and more clean headroom. Lead mode delivers the searing tone of none other than the Marshall Super Lead 100w Plexi (but just a little quieter), while Brown mode takes inspiration from the hot-rodded tone of one of rock’s greatest guitar players.

The face of the Lion ’68 Super Lead Amp naturally begins with controls for Volume 1 and Volume 2, emulating the High Treble and Normal channel volumes of a vintage Plexi. Controls for Bass, Middle, and Treble follow, as well as a master output dial. Flipping the center mini-toggle to the “Up” position enters “Alt” mode, allowing the player to dial in controls for Room ambience, Presence, and Boost.

Depending on the amp mode selected, the Lion offers three styles of boost tailored to each model. These boosts are modeled after the preamp section of a Maestro EP-III Echoplex, Boss GE-10 Equalizer, and the effect of running a Variac.

Three styles of speaker cabinet are offered stock on the Lion, with three additional cabinets available upon product registration via the UAFX Control app. These cabinet models are all derived from Universal Audio’s flagship OX Amp Top Box. Players can also disable the speaker cabinet model if desired to run the Lion into external or third party IRs, as well as into a standard guitar amplifier.
